Shortly after the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reveal of Kodi Smit-McPhee as the younger, sprightly version of the illustrious Nightcrawler, director Bryan Singer has today marked the start of production on X-men: Apocalypse by sharing some photos from the set, which usher the likes of Cylcops, Jean Grey and Jubilee into the limelight.

Sporting decidedly 80s costumes, the images, much like Nightcrawler beforehand, show younger portrayals of the beloved mutants. As you’ll see below, there’s also a handful of interesting changes that the actors have underwent in order to remain faithful to the comics. Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner, for instance, dons a a brighter hairstyle for her role as the telekinetic maestro, while Lana Condor’s rendition of Jubilee is almost tit-for-tat, adorning the signature yellow jacket and sunglasses that fans of the X-Men comics will recognize instantly.

Setting up shop in Montreal, X-Men: Apocalypse will get the cameras rolling today ahead of its release in 2016. It’s a familiar setting for the film’s returning stars, given that the Canadian city played as host for a variety of scenes for last year’s excellent Days of Future Past. Can the metropolis act as a good luck charm for Singer and Co. once again?

With Oscar Isaac rounding up his four horseman as the titular and indeed tyrannical villain, X-Men: Apocalypse will herald the return of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, with newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Lana Condor rounding out the impressive, star-studded cast. Singer’s feature hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
