The summer is soon coming to a close and the summer blockbusters are going to be gone before you know it. Once September hits we'll be getting into Oscar season and the popcorn flicks will be nowhere in sight. Luckily this month we have a few more big summer blockbusters to look forward to. Mercenaries, evil ex-boyfriends, cops and the online porn industry are all part of our picks for five films to see in August.

As the month of August begins, we now have a whole month of new releases to look forward to. The summer is soon coming to a close and the summer blockbusters are going to be gone before you know it. Once September hits, we’ll be getting into Oscar season and the popcorn flicks will be nowhere in sight. Luckily this month we have a few more big summer blockbusters to look forward to. Mercenaries, evil ex-boyfriends, cops, thieves and the online porn industry are all part of our picks for five films to see in August.

#1. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – August 13th – Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick and Kieran Culkin. Check out our review here.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will easily end up as the coolest and quite possibly the highest grossing movie of August. Based on the popular graphic novel, the film tells the story of Scott Pilgrim who falls in love with Ramona Flowers. To win her over, Scott must defeat Ramona’s seven ex-boyfriends who are out to kill him.

Likely to strike more of a chord with the youth in society, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World looks to offer a wacky, over the top, and utterly cool experience. Coming to us from director Edgar Wright, the same man who brought us Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, I can’t see this movie not being enjoyable. Michael Cera (who’s always funny) leads a well rounded cast and so far all the footage I’ve seen looks pretty good. The hype for this film is enormous and I for one am really looking forward to seeing it.

#2. The Expendables – August 13th – Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Staham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Steve Austin. Check out our review here.

What do you get when you take the biggest action stars currently working in Hollywood and put them all in one film? You get The Expendables. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables will probably be the most action packed movie of August. Starring Jet Li, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren, the film is going to be the ‘guy’ movie of the summer.

The film centers on a team of deadly mercenaries who are sent to South America to overthrow a dictator. The Expendables is sure to offer a heart pumping, testoserone raising, over the top barrage of in your face action. Even if the story is dull (which it may very well be) the intense and exciting action should be enough to hold your attention. With the cast Stallone has gathered for The Expendables there is no way it can turn out boring.

#3. The Other Guys – August 6th – Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Check out our review here.

In June we saw the release of Get Him To The Greek. Starring Russell Brand and Jonah Hill, the film was easily the funniest movie of the year. Now we’re into August and come August 6th, Brand and Hill may have to give  their title of funniest film of the year to The Other Guys.

Starring Wahlberg and Ferrell as the leads, this buddy cop film looks absolutely hilarious. The trailer itself may have you in stitches and although Wahlberg isn’t exactly known for comedy, Ferrell seems to be the king of it. Director Adam McKay is behind the camera for this one and with films like Step Brothers, Talladega Nights and Anchorman on his list, this is sure to be a hit.

#4. Middle Men – August 6th – Starring Giovanni Ribisi, Luke Wilson and James Cann.

It started off as a simple idea and these men were the pioneers. Jack Harris along with his two buddies came up with the idea of uploading naked pictures of women onto the internet and charging people to view the pictures. It was simple enough at first but it eventually spawned the online porn industry and changed internet commerce forever. At first the boys are making more money than they could ever dream of but when FBI, mobsters and corrupt politicans get involved, it isn’t all fun and games anymore.

Based on the life of Chris Mallick, Middle Men tells the story behind it all. Luke Wilson stars as Jack Harris in what is sure to be a wild ride. It’s a story that really hasn’t been told before and one that will surely interest a lot of people. The trailer looks really interesting and I think the film is going to turn out to be quite entertaining, its got a solid cast and a great premise and just may be the sleeper hit of the month.

#5 Takers – August 20th – Starring Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, T.I., Hayden Christensen, Matt Dillon and Michael Ealy. Check out our review here.

Inception may have been the heist film of the year, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a couple more thieves on the big screen. Takers is hoping to steal your money in August when it hits theatres on the 20th. Starring two big musicians (T.I. and Chris Brown) and a slew of other solid and dependable actors, Takers just may surprise you. There hasn’t been much hype for the film as of yet, but this is a film I’m really looking forward to seeing.

The film will revolve around a group of bank robbers who are pulled into one last job by Ghost (T.I.). The job seems easy enough until Jack Welles (Matt Dillon), a hard boiled detective, gets in their way. Sure to be filled with enough action and thrills to keep you on the edge of your seat, Takers may be the perfect way to end the summer.
