Movie audiences are always intrigued by the struggles animals overcome. It always makes for an interesting story and Luna, the baby orca who became separated from his family off the western coast of Vancouver Island, is bound to be no different. Orcas are highly social animals who spend their lives traveling with their pods, so Luna began making contact with people along Nootka Sound after he was separated from his family.

The new documentary The Whale, is narrated by Canadian native Ryan Reynolds and was directed by Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm. It’s set to hit theaters on September 16, and we are now bringing you its full-length trailer.

The Whale, which was also executive produced by Reynolds, chronicles how area locals become conflicted over wanting to find a surrogate family for Luna, becoming worried that human contact may harm him. The film also describes how Parfit and Chisholm, who traveled to Nootka Sound for an assignment for the Smithsonian, became concerned about Luna’s future. Determined to find a way to help save the orca, the directors decided to document their journey.

I’m always interested in how people think about the lives with whom we share the planet, like Luna. Making this film had a huge effect on my mind on that subject. Among the questions I think our film makes you consider are these: Is it possible for humans to have real friendships with animals, either domestic or wild? And if so, what are those friendships like?

If anyone wants to comment on that here, I’d sure be interested to know what you think.

    Thanks,

    Mike Parfit
