After watching him catch waves in Chasing Mavericks, audiences will get another chance to see Gerard Butler hit the water as the Scottish actor has just been cast in Alcon Entertainment's Point Break remake. After watching him catch waves in Chasing Mavericks, audiences will get another chance to see Gerard Butler hit the water as the Scottish actor has just been cast in Alcon Entertainment’s Point Break remake. He’ll take on the role of Bodhi, who was portrayed by Patrick Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film. On board to direct is Ericson Core and scripting is Kurt Wimmer.

For this version, the setting will take place in the world of extreme sports. Fear not though as surfing will still factor into the story with Bodhi being described as someone who “seeks nirvana through the conquest of a series of athletic feats such as surfing 100-foot waves.” And of course, the core plot will still revolve around FBI agent Johnny Utah, who tries to take down a ring of criminals.

Unfortunately, we have no details on who will play Utah but now that Butler has been cast, I’d expect that we’ll be hearing more on this one soon. As of now though, I can’t say I have too much confidence that this remake will be able to live up to the incredibly high standard that its predecessor set.

Sure, I like Butler and he’s a capable action lead, but considering the fact that Kurt Wimmer destroyed the Total Recall remake, I don’t have much faith that he can do something respectable with this one. Hopefully I’m wrong though, because the original Point Break was great and it would be a shame if they ruined the remake.

Point Break will begin shooting this Summer for a 2015 release, we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
