In casting news that shouldn’t surprise anyone, Gina Carano has been cast in the untitled film that is being pitched as an all female version of The Expendables.

The former MMA fighter and Haywire star has steadily been growing her filmography ever since breaking out in the aforementioned Steven Soderbergh flick. And while she’s not exactly a big name just yet, she’s certainly on her way to becoming one.

Variety is the one breaking the news and while they don’t have any other names for us, seeing as Carano is attached, the female Expendables may be headed in a different direction than the male one.

Instead of casting old-school action stars like many people expected (Sigourney Weaver, Lucy Lawless and Jamie Lee Curtis were all names that were being floated around), it looks like the film is looking to take on current talent. Milla Jovovich anyone? What about Kate Beckinsale?

As of now everything is up in the air but the next couple casting choices should give us a better idea of where this female Expendables is headed.

What do you think though? Would you rather see an old school line up or would the film be better off going with current female action stars?
