That’s something Vin Diesel teased in a recent interview, and though we’ve already seen two versions of Groot on the big screen, the actor promises that an entirely different iteration of the sentient tree could be on the way post-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

“The first Groot we saw was a freshman in college. This (Guardians 2) Groot is in nursery school. Wait ’til we see the full-fledged working-man Groot. Wait ’til we see Groot!”

Earlier this week, we learned that four years will have passed between the events of Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, so Groot will have had more than enough time to grow up into something very different by the time Joe and Anthony Russo’s blockbuster rolls around. As for what else the future holds in store for him, Vol. 3 is obviously a certainty at this point, but Diesel also has some very interesting crossover ideas in mind for the character.

“James Gunn has always wanted a Rocket and Groot movie. And I know that Disney is very much into being successful. And the most successful poster in Disney’s future is the poster that has ‘Groot vs. Hulk.’ … (The world) cannot wait to see it.”

If you’ve ever read a comic book, you’ll know that it’s pretty much inevitable that the Avengers will clash with the Guardians when the teams first meet, so a Groot vs. Hulk slugfest is entirely possible. That Rocket/Groot team-up would also be a lot of fun to see on the big screen.

For now, though, Groot will be taking centre stage as a baby in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and for our full thoughts on Gunn’s wacky and wild sequel, you can check out our review right here.
