Following an announcement that there’s to be a federal investigation into discrimination against female directors in Hollywood, Iron Man actress Gwyneth Paltrow was asked to give her thoughts on the matter during an interview with Variety, and she used the opportunity to discuss the wage inequality between male and female actors, describing the disparity between the two as “painful.”

Robert Downey Jr. nabbed $111 million this year, having starred in just one movie, and was named Hollywood’s highest grossing actor. To put this into context, the highest grossing actress, Jennifer Lawrence, made about $72 million, despite having headlined several films.

Because of this, Paltrow uses her Iron Man co-star as an example:

“Your salary is a way to quantify what you’re worth. If men are being paid a lot more for doing the same thing, it feels s***y. Look, nobody is worth the money that Robert Downey Jr. is worth. But if I told you the disparity, you would probably be surprised.”

Tell us, readers, what are your thoughts on all of this? Do you agree with Paltrow, or should Hollywood superstars like Downey Jr. be able to amass as much cash as they can get away with, even when their female colleagues are forced to make do with less?
