Currently, Hollywood has two Hercules projects in the works. The first is simply titled Hercules and will be directed by Brett Ratner. Dwayne Johnson will headline the film and he will be supported by Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes and John Hurt. Then there’s Hercules 3D, coming to us from Renny Harlin.
Up until now, there hadn’t been any news on casting for the film but this week, Heat Vision is reporting that Kellan Lutz of Twilight fame (he played Emmett Cullen), has been cast in the titular role.
“It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart,” said Harlin.
The film, which is being scripted by Harlin, Sean Hood (Conan The Barbarian (2011)) and Giulio Steve, doesn’t sound too appealing to me. At least not yet. Of the two projects, Hercules sounds a bit better than Hercules 3D but if I’m being completely honest, neither of the films really have me excited at this point.
I’m expecting something along the lines of Immortals (which Lutz also starred in), mixed with Clash of The Titans for both projects. Not that those films weren’t fun and mildly entertaining, but they were both pretty empty and bland.
Plus, it’s not like there is any serious talent involved in either of the competing Hercules films, which gives me even less faith. Admittedly, Ian McShane is pretty good and Dwayne Johnson is always entertaining but when it comes to Hercules 3D, I can’t find one name that sticks out as being a draw, for me at least.
What do you make of all this Hercules nonsense? Which film sounds more appealing, Hercules or Hercules 3D? Let us know in the comments below.
