It Sounds Like The Rights To Namor The Sub-Mariner Are Back At Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios has quietly reacquired a number of characters in recent years, including Daredevil, The Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider, and more. However, one superhero who has remained something of a mystery is Namor the Sub-Mariner, with some claiming that the rights are held by Universal Pictures and Kevin Feige saying only that it's "complicated."

Marvel Studios has quietly re-acquired a number of characters in recent years, including Daredevil, The Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider and more. However, one superhero who has remained something of a mystery is Namor the Sub-Mariner, with some claiming that the rights are held by Universal Pictures and Kevin Feige saying only that it’s “complicated.”

Now, it appears that we have some more information to go on, as during a recent appearance on Kevin Smith’s Fat Man on Batman podcast, Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada was asked if Namor is back with Marvel Studios, and while his answer wasn’t 100% definitive, it definitely sounds as if the King of Atlantis is back home.

“I can’t speak for studios…As far as I know, yeah we do. It’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony…Yeah.”

Quesada said that he can’t comment on any possible big screen plans for Namor, but common sense says that a movie like Avengers: Infinity War would be the best place to introduce him. After all, it’s going to be all hands on deck when Thanos arrives on Earth with the Infinity Gauntlet in his possession, and having Namor’s army join the fray could work out well.

For now though, we’re just going to have to wait and see. With an Aquaman movie in the works, chances are we won’t see Namor get his own solo outing until Phase 4, if the rights really are back with Marvel Studios, as they’ll no doubt want to see how that undersea adventure does first.
