Though James Cameron is knee deep in Pandora and all things Avatar, THR is reporting that the director will helm The Informationist for Fox once he’s done with Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, which are shooting back to back.

Based on Taylor Steven’s novel, the story features a strong female protagonist named Vanessa “Michael” Munroe, who “grew up in Africa as the protege to a gunrunner and his mercenaries when she was only 14 years old. As an adult, she’s become a highly touted information specialist with an expansive clientele. When a Texas billionaire hires her to track his daughter, who went missing in Africa four years prior, Munroe must face her past to find the girl.”

According to Cameron:

“Taylor Stevens’ Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story. I’m looking forwarding to bringing Vanessa and her world to the big screen.”

Producer Jon Landau followed that up by saying:

“We were drawn to this book because of the terrific, compelling narrative and the character, who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s work – in this case Vanessa Munroe is essentially a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne.”

Of course, Cameron’s decision to helm The Informationist leaves the fate of Battle Angel up in the air but Landau has promised that we’ll see it eventually. Which could mean in 5-10 years from now.

As for The Informationist, I can’t say that it sounds like something that is up Cameron’s ally but the director obviously seems interested in it. I’d rather see him pursue something more ambitious though, like the above mentioned Battle Angel.

That being said, this is still James Cameron we’re talking about and due to that reason and that reason alone, I’m sure The Informationist will be worth a watch.

Isn’t that always the case with the self-proclaimed “king of the world?”
