Eager to give audiences another dose of spiritual blue tree people and 3D-induced headaches, James Cameron has announced that he’ll start filming the long-awaited Avatar 2 at some point next year, because wouldn’t you if it guaranteed a cash injection of $1 billion straight into your bank account? Though lately Cameron has been putting his name on other people’s bad movie projects as just a producer, Avatar 2 will mark the first time since 2009 that he returns to the director’s chair.
Though no official details have emerged regarding the plot for the sequel, Cameron has hinted on a number of occasions that the film could focus on Pandora’s vast oceans. Oh, so that’s why he did Sanctum: he used somebody else to test out that water stuff and then paid them to take the blame. Makes sense. As for working on the actual scripts for Avatar 2, here’s what ol’ Jim had to say:
“I want to get these scripts nailed down. I don’t want to be writing the movie in post production. We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and I don’t want to do that again.”
Cameron also mentioned that 48 FPS is a technology he’s thinking about utilizing for the sequels, depending on the reception it receives once The Hobbit debuts.
“If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for Avatar [sequels] to take advantage of it,” he said. Never one to miss a technological trick, is our James…”
The first Avatar movie was a gargantuan hit back in 2009, where it overtook Titantic (also written and directed by Cameron) as the highest-grossing picture of all-time. The man really knows how to create a hit. Somehow.
