Though James Gunn is now a director most well known for his involvement with Marvel and in particular, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, things could have turned out very differently for him had he chosen to direct a DC Comics film when offered one.
In a recent Q&A session on his Facebook page, Gunn revealed that he did indeed get offered a DC movie back before he got involved with Marvel. He wouldn’t say which one, but did note that he’s no longer interested in working with them. He did, however, mention that if he were to ever make a DC movie, the characters he’d like to put on the big screen most are Shazam, the Metal Men, Swamp Thing and Jonah Hex.
Obviously, at this stage, there’s little to no chance of Gunn ever directing a film for DC. Not just because of his Marvel ties, but also because he seems to be tired of the genre. He recently stated that while there will probably be a third Guardians of the Galaxy, he’s unsure of if he’ll return to direct. You can’t really blame him either, as making Guardians 1 and 2 was no doubt a massive undertaking and it’s completely understandable if he’d want to return to indie filmmaking.
Either way, we’ve still got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to look forward to when it comes to Gunn-helmed superhero movies, and thankfully, we don’t have long to wait, as it’ll zoom into theatres on May 5th, 2017.
