Seeing as how the Joker is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, I must admit that I was quite indifferent to the news stating a standalone solo film was being developed for him.
Sure, it could work, but promises of a gritty crime drama set in the 1980’s that’s entirely separate from the DC Extended Universe is more than enough to make me skeptical. Really, the prospect of a Clown Prince of Crime potentially existing without a Batman is pure blasphemy, but, on the the plus side, he won’t be played by Jared Leto.
And since word regarding this project got out last summer, we haven’t had too much to go on, save for Joaquin Phoenix being named as the one most likely to star as the titular character. Luckily, Jeff Sneider, editor-in-chief over at The Tracking Board, uncovered the listing pictured below, posting it on Twitter.
As you can see, a production start date is pegged for May 1st of this year, so even if Phoenix doesn’t land the gig, we expect more concrete news to break before long. Furthermore, one would think that if everything stays on track, a 2019 release date can be achieved. Yes, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 may be the only confirmed entries into the DCEU for that year, but something like this disconnected project will probably require a lower budget and could drop during any given month.
Slated to be directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese, the untitled Joker movie is set to revolve around a “young” Ace of Knaves that the above listing places between the ages of 29-40. As always, we’ll keep you posted as more news develops, so be sure to stay tuned.
