Joss Whedon Being Courted For Star Wars?

After distancing himself from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon may be heading to a galaxy far, far away if Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and others at Disney have their way. That's the gist of a new rumor report from Latino Review, which boils its circumspect, rambling story down into this: "Joss Whedon’s circling Star Wars. They are courting him. He is very tired, but - hey! - it’s Star Wars."

After distancing himself from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon may be heading to a galaxy far, far away if Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and others at Disney have their way. That’s the gist of a new rumor report from Latino Review, which boils its circumspect, rambling story down into this: “Joss Whedon’s circling Star Wars. They are courting him. He is very tired, but – hey! – it’s Star Wars.”

The site’s writer says that when he dug into rumors that Whedon might be wanted for a Star Wars movie, “NO ONE wanted to comment beyond saying that something was happening.” He goes on to say that the Lucasfilm Story Group, Kennedy and Disney have watched him handle the MCU with admiration, and they think he’s more than equipped to handle expanding the Star Wars universe for them.

According to the report, Whedon’s withdrawal from Twitter and less-than-kind statements toward Marvel were actually just a big ruse, designed to throw people off his trail as he talked with the Star Wars brain trust about him possibly coming into the fold.

Of course, J.J. Abrams has priority on Episode IX, and a recent interview indicated he’s not going to pass that up. Gareth Edwards and Rian Johnson both have their movies (Rogue One and Episode VIII), but they’re busy guys, and Edwards in particular has Godzilla 2 waiting on him. Whedon, however, could be slotted in to replace Josh Trank on what’s rumored to be a Boba Fett origin story – or he could end up working with the Star Wars gang in some other capacity, perhaps as a consultant or piloting the franchise toward the small screen.

The possibilities are endless, but the main takeaway here is that Latino Review’s writer seems to think Whedon is getting on the Star Wars bandwagon. Whether it’s true or not, that idea in of itself is thrilling enough for this avowed Firefly fan to spend the rest of the day with his head in the clouds.
