Netflix is making some BIG moves into the world of original films. Earlier today, they snapped up a very exciting project coming to us from Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and Andrew Dominik called War Party, and now they’re teaming up with director Justin Lin to bring us The Stand Off, a period drama written by Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman.
Deadline reports that the pic will take place in December of 1969, when “a newly formed Police unit known as the “SWAT team” embarked on their first major operation: to raid the Los Angeles Headquarters of the Black Panther Party. Seen from both perspectives, the resulting face off would be the most intense in the city’s long history, and its ramifications are still felt today.” It sounds like a fascinating premise for what’s sure to be a dark and gritty film, one that will no doubt be brought to life in thrilling fashion by Lin.
What this means for his Star Trek commitments is what’s got people talking the most today and as of now, we have no indication as to if the director plans on returning to the franchise for the fourth outing. Given that he’s now signed on to make The Stand Off with Netflix, however, it seems that he’s probably going to be leaving Star Trek 4 to another director, as Paramount likely won’t want to wait around too long to make it.
Circling back to this project though, and with a director and scribe now set, casting should be getting underway shortly. There’s certainly a lot of meaty roles here and with such impressive talent already on board behind the scenes, it’ll be interesting to see who Netflix snags to lead the project in front of the camera.
We’ll bring you more updates as we get them, but for now, tell us, are you excited to see Justin Lin heading to the streaming service for The Stand Off? Sound off in the usual place with your thoughts.
