We’ve seen blistering trailers and scores of screenshots and now, series stalwart Karl Urban has weighed in on Star Trek Beyond and, in particular, the “complex” relationship between his Leonard McCoy and Spock (Zachary Quinto).

As past promos for Justin Lin’s threequel have teased, McCoy and Spock will be forced to brush aside old rivalries if they are to survive on a remote alien world. Shedding some light on this dynamic, Karl Urban revealed to IGN that even though the scattered crew of the Enterprise find themselves in great peril, there are still moments of humor littered throughout their galactic adventure.

Per IGN:

The dynamic is complex. There is a great deal of humor, but it’s contextualized by the framework of jeopardy and danger of the situation that they’re in. I believe that their relationship really evolves, and you get to see them both kind of drop their guard and be who they really are around each other — just get a little glimpse of that, which is fantastic and rewarding, especially for long-term Star Trek fans. It’s something that I believe you haven’t really seen before. To me, that was really the challenge of the film, to not only honor the 50 years of Star Trek, pay homage to what had come before, but also mine new territory and take these characters into uncharted waters — and that’s what we’ve done with Star Trek Beyond.

Urban and Quinto’s bickering duo will be rubbing shoulders with crewmates Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin. There’s also room for Sofia Boutella’s newcomer in Star Trek Beyond, with the Kingsman breakout assuming the role of an alien ally. Meanwhile, Idris Elba hails from the other end of the moral compass as Krall, a relentless nemesis to Captain Kirk and Co.. Originally pitched by Roberto Orci before his exit, Beyond‘s script arrives by way of Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.

Star Trek Beyond shoots for theaters on July 22. To check in with the growing cast of character posters, feast your eyes on the gallery below.
