Once believed to be a shoo-in for the Captain Marvel gig, TheWrap brings word today that Emily Carmichael – a director who has enjoyed notable success in the indie scene with a string of eye-catching shorts, including The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting – has agreed terms to helm the Lumberjanes adaptation for 20th Century Fox.
First hatched as an eight-part limited series two years ago, Shannon Watters, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis and Brooke Allen are the brains behind the “female version of The Goonies.” Since that humble debut, Lumberjanes has gone on to attract a strong and impassioned following – and that’s something Fox will be keen to foster as the comic book preps to jump onto the big screen.
In fact, TheWrap notes that Lumberjanes is considered a priority at the studio, which was first pitched via Kira Goldberg and Emma Watts. As the adaptation began to develop, Will Widger was enlisted to pen the script, though there’s no mention of a new writer to tailor Widger’s initial vision. Ryan Jones, Ross Richie, Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin are on board to produce.
Beyond directing duties on Lumberjanes, Emily Carmichael also holds a screenwriting credit on Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2 – said to be titled Maelstrom. It’ll bow on February 23, 2018.
