One Major Character In Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Dies Before The Movie

Zack Snyder's new Batman universe has forgotten the gloomy, noir stylings of Christopher Nolan's trilogy. In his second entry into the Warner Bros./DC comic book movie canon, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Bruce Wayne has been at work in Gotham for years. Seventeen years to be exact, which almost guarantees the fact that a ton of events have gone down in those crime-filled streets. According to those meisters of rumour, Badass Digest, there's one particular character who has "gone down" during that period. Look away now if you wish to enter the multiplex completely surprised by the events of the movie.

SPOILER ALERT

According to Devin over at BD, the name he’s heard strongly linked to an early grave is none other than Detective Jim Gordon. It seems like poor old Jim constantly gets the short straw wherever he turns up, and now it looks as though he won’t even make an appearance in Snyder’s world. This hooks into early discussion concerning the lack of casting for his character.

Here’s the full scoop from BD:

In this continuity James Gordon has, at some point in the past, bitten the dust. How and at whose hands I cannot tell you – all that’s noted in the script is that there’s a memorial plaque to James Gordon. This explains why the role wasn’t cast for the film, at least.

What does a dead Jim Gordon mean for BvS? Not much technically… but it could have big consequences for the new DC Movieverse. While pre-Terrio drafts of the script mentioned a deceased Robin, later iterations closer to the start of shooting don’t – perhaps in this continuity The Joker killed Jim Gordon instead of Robin?

The impact of having Gordon dead before the movie begins is unknown as we’ve little else to go on with regards to whether he was slated to appear in other entries. As BD stated, there could be strong ties to The Joker’s involvement hooked in to Gordon’s death.

Just last week, we brought you the news that in BvS, Batman will be aware of The Joker despite his absence in the movie. Since then, Jared Leto officially signed on to play the role in Suicide Squad – but will he also make appearances over in Batman’s future solo outings?

Breaking it down for a moment, if Warner and DC are fully intending to wring out a host of new stories – untold by Nolan’s trilogy – then that 17-year gap harbours a lot of Gotham’s juiciest tales. So, in theory, Jim Gordon’s death, which is a big deal, ought to be captured in either Justice League or a future Batman spinoff pic.

At this point, it’s difficult to guess where Warner intend to steer the franchise. Will they opt for a straightforward linear timeline following a strict chronology, or jump back and forth between events? After all, we did hear rumours that the Wonder Woman spinoff is headed back to the 1920s, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. What do you think, should Jim Gordon’s death be circled back to in a future flick? Let us know in the comments below!

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theatres on March 25th, 2016. Suicide Squad opens on August 5th, 2016.
