After The Best Man Holiday, a star-studded follow-up to 1999’s The Best Man, became a huge success last November, Universal must have realized what a hit it had on its hands. Now, the studio has set a third installment, titled The Best Man Wedding, for release on April 15th, 2016.
A few things made a third installment in the series a near certainty. Firstly, The Best Man Holiday, budgeted at $17 million, had a terrific $30 million opening weekend and went on to become the fifth most successful R-rated romantic comedy of all time. Secondly, it received a stunning A+ CinemaScore across all quadrants. And finally, it starred an embarrassment of in-demand stars including Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Harold Perrineau, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Melissa De Sousa and Regina Hall. All of those actors are expected to be back for The Best Man Wedding.
Plot details were scarce, as Universal reported only that the threequel “features the group getting back together for a most unexpected nuptials.” Malcolm D. Lee is returning to script and direct The Best Man Wedding, as he did the last two installments. Sean Daniel is also back in a producing capacity.
For now, The Best Man Wedding is the only film slated for release on April 15th, 2016. Based on the success of the last installment, I’d wager that most other big movies will be leaving that weekend alone, avoiding a confrontation with the high-grossing crowd-pleaser.
