The future of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man has been in question for some time, as the actor has made it clear that he doesn’t want to overstay his welcome as the character. Now, Mark Wahlberg is throwing his hat in the ring to take over as Tony Stark, saying he’d like to pick up the franchise when Downey Jr. is done.

Wahlberg said that although he doesn’t get asked to play superheroes, probably because he likes playing real people, Iron Man is a character he’d be interested in. Furthermore, he also reveals that he was once considered for another iconic comic book character.

Check out what he had to say below.

“I would like to take over the ‘Iron Man’ franchise for Robert Downey, [but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked. Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in ‘Batman [Forever] — somebody dodged a bullet!”

In June, Downey Jr. signed an extension to play the character in Avengers: Age Of Ultron and The Avengers 3, but after that the future is unknown. Not that there necessarily needs to be more Iron Man after that, as taking a superhero past six appearances is something that only Hugh Jackman has done in recent memory, but if the demand is still there, you can be sure Marvel is going to find a way to get Iron Man to the big screen.

That being said, I don’t think Wahlberg is the best choice. Don’t me wrong, Marky Mark is one of my absolute favorite actors of all time. From Fear to The Fighter he’s been a treat to watch in every single movie, but Iron Man has a distinct set of cocky mannerisms that I just can’t see Wahlberg matching. Then again, Downey Jr. is just about perfect as the character, meaning whoever takes his place would be following a nearly impossible act, so why not let Wahlberg try? He’s a talented actor, and I’m sure he could create an enjoyable version of the character, though it would likely be quite different from Downey’s.

Ironman isn’t necessarily cocky. That’s just how RDJ portrays him. It happens to work extremely well. I don’t believe there is anybody that will be able to fill the shoes of RDJ. Ironman is going to have to take a back seat for a couple of films until fans start to move on. Only after a good amount of time and a couple mediocre to crappy movies will fans be ready for a new Iron Man. Expectations need to be lowered.

Spoken like a true studio beancounter. “Expectations”, “fanwhiners”, and “allegiances”, oh my!

  • Barry

Yes, he was a real treat to watch in “The Happening.”

When RDJ lets go of the character, so should the Marvel movie universe, at least for a decade. It’s not JUST because I can’t imagine anyone being able to fill his shoes or add something unique enough that also is in keeping with the overlapping thread of the movies. It’s also that there are so many other Marvel characters that they can fold in to the Avengers lineup, so why not give them some bigscreen exposure?

Please no. Robert Downey is charming, witty, talented, and DOES NOT TAKE HIMSELF TOO SERIOUSLY…for example, if Andy Samberg pretended to be RDJ and talk to a chicken, I’m sure RDJ would, you know, not act like a total machismo dipshit about it in response.

    No.

I like Mark Wahlberg, but he would be putting himself in a complete no win scenario if he were to attempt to fill RDJ’s shoes as Iron Man. Besides, Iron Many isn’t mopey, monotone, and whiny.

  • chaqzza

I would rather have him as Sherlock Holmes than iron man if he had to full RDJ shoes in any film.

  • DoobieDave

Wahlberg can’t play smart. There is no way anyone could buy him as one of the smartest people in the world

Worst casting ever. I like Marky Mark but find the poor guy a role that fits

  • Norman Dostal

very funny, Marky Mark! you have to be able to act to play Iron Man-lot of nerve!!

  • Jon

When Downey is done, so will Ironman. Would never be the same. ever..

Is he going to talk like he was rapping while portraying tony stark?
