Though the horror genre is often criticized for churning out more trash than most, when it’s done right, it’s a wonder to behold and 2017, in particular, has been a truly fantastic year for those who like their movies scary. Between It, Get Out and Annabelle: Creation, among others, horror flicks have ruled over the box office for the past few months, making it the biggest year for the genre ever. And the best part? 2018 looks to be just as good.

Between Insidious: Chapter 4, Annihilation, The Purge: The Island, The Nun, The Conjuring 3 and Halloween, among many others, there’s much to look forward to over the next year or so and with any luck, 2018 might just beat 2017 at the box office. But which releases are fans most excited about?

With so much due to hit theaters in the near future, it’s hard to narrow it down, but Fandango’s done just that, revealing the results of their survey where they polled more than 8,000 people and asked them what horror/thriller films they’re looking forward to the most. Though some of the picks are certainly expected, the top one might just surprise you.

  1. Cloverfield 3
  2. Halloween
  3. The Purge: The Island
  4. Insidious: The Last Key
  5. A Quiet Place

Yes, that’s right. Cloverfield 3, a movie we know next to nothing about, has beaten out heavy hitters such as Halloween, The Strangers: Prey at Night and The Conjuring 3. Don’t get us wrong, we loved both Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, but it’s still a bit surprising that the third installment in the mysterious franchise has come out on top here. Especially when 2018 is packed with so many great releases.

As for the rest of the films on this list, the three sequels – Halloween, The Purge: The Island and Insidious: The Last Key – make sense, given the popularity of the franchises they belong to, while rounding out the top 5 is a movie called A Quiet Place. Arriving with little buzz, this is another surprise and again, we fail to see how the pic beat out something like The Nun or even Shane Black’s Predator reboot. Then again, with a cast headlined by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, there’s no reason to doubt that A Quiet Place will be one of the top performers in the genre next year.

Tell us, what do you make of Fandango’s survey? Are you surprised by any of the results? And which horror releases are you most looking forward to? Take to the comments section down below and share your thoughts!
