As if the steady stream of behind-the-scenes photos didn’t give it away, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is currently in the thick of production in Cape Town, South Africa, and series stalwart Milla Jovovich has shared a very strange image from the set.
Sporting striking make-up, the actress took to Instagram earlier today to unveil Old Alice, raising all manner of questions about where director Paul W. S. Anderson will take the last entry into the franchise. It doesn’t necessarily spoil anything in the strictest sense of the word, though if you’re wanting to remain totally fresh for The Final Chapter, we’d advise against going any further.

But what could it mean? As this is the ultimate chapter in Resident Evil‘s cinematic tenure – no, really – common logic would dictate that Old Alice will make an appearance in some form of Harry Potter-like epilogue scene. Only rather than seeing her children off onto the Hogwarts Express, today’s image could represent the final clone of Milla Jovovich’s heroine, bringing a sense of closure to her gruelling journey against the undead and the Umbrella Corporation.
Closing the book on ScreenGems’ lucrative flesh-munching franchise, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will make its bow on January 27, 2017. Joining Jovovich in the last installment are Ali Larter, Iain Glen, Shawn Roberts, Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, William Levy, Fraser James, and Rola.
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
