That’s a decision which has upset a lot of comic book fans who like seeing Mystique as a villain, but it’s a refreshing direction to take the character in, especially after years of seeing her serve as little more than a henchman of sorts for Magneto. However, based on the new clip from X-Men: Apocalypse in the player above, it’s not a role that the character is finding easy to embrace.

This scene has clearly been lifted from a fairly late point in X-Men: Apocalypse, as the inexperienced team head into battle against Oscar Isaac’s En Sabah Nur, and with Jennifer Lawrence recently making it clear that she’s unsure about returning for another movie, we may have to just enjoy seeing her as Mystique while it lasts regardless of whether she’s portrayed as a good or bad guy.

X-Men: Apocalyse stars Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Oscar Isaac among others. It hits US theatres this Friday and for our own thoughts on the film, be sure to check out our review.
