THR is reporting that Penelope Cruz is circling a role in Ridley Scott‘s The Counselor. The film, written by Cormac McCarthy, stars Michael Fassbender in the lead role of The Counselor as well as Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt, who are all but confirmed.

Cruz is said to be circling the role of the Counselor’s love interest, Laura, a role that previously had Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie attached. Personally, I think Cruz seems much more suited to the role of Malinka, an Argentinean woman who is the love interest of the character Reiner, who is likely to be played by Cruz’s husband Javier Bardem.

In more news on The Counselor, Jolie may have to pass on the film due to her commitment to Disney’s Maleficent. The film is supposed to begin shooting this June in England, which is around the same time that she would be needed for The Counselor.

Though Fassbender is the only actor that is 100% confirmed, you can expect to hear more official casting news shortly as the film is about to go into production.

The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender and will be released in 2013.
