Russell Crowe is loosely attached to portray the villain in screenwriter-producer Akiva Goldsman‘s passion project and directorial debut, Winter’s Tale. The period reincarnation film, which is set up at Warner Bros., is based on Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel, and takes place in both the beginning and the end of the 20th century.

Movie Web is reporting that Thor‘s Tom Hiddleston and Benjamin Walker from the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter are being considered for the male lead. For the female lead, In Time‘s Bella Heathcote, as well as Elizabeth Olsen, Gabriele Wilde from The Three Musketeers and A Dangerous Method‘s Sarah Gadon are all being considered. Chemistry reads for the parts are expected to begin this weekend.

Winter’s Tale, which is still searching for a third-party financier, follows Peter Lake, a burglar who steals from an Irish heiress, and begins to fall for her as she dies in his arms. He comes to learn that he has the gift of reincarnation, and sets out to save her.

A production date for Winter’s Date hasn’t yet been announced, but the film is set to hit theaters in 2013. The lists for the actors and actresses being considered for the lead roles is diverse, so the stars Goldsman ultimately chooses should be interesting.
