Ryan Reynolds Channels A Much Darker Doctor Dolittle In New Trailer For The Voices

If you're a pet owner, you'll know all to well that as time passes, you begin to grow a tendency to talk freely to your furry companion as if it's no big deal. Sure, it's a little nutty, but what would happen if that same pet talked back? It's a fantastical, downright terrifying scenario, and one that underpins Ryan Reynolds' upcoming R-rated comedy, The Voices.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ll know all to well that as time passes, you begin to grow a tendency to talk freely to your furry companion as if it’s no big deal. Sure, it’s a little nutty, but what would happen if that same pet talked back? It’s a fantastical, downright terrifying scenario, and one that underpins Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming R-rated comedy, The Voices.

Directed by Marjane Satrapi, the film first began to gain traction off the back of its appearance at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was described as a crazy concoction of dark comedy. And to give moviegoers a taste of this eccentric tone, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled an all-new trailer for the film that pushes Reynolds’ Jerry — a somewhat naive, unhinged pet-lover — into some dark places. You can check out that clip in question through EW’s site.

Joining Reynolds for the flick are Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver. But perhaps the two biggest stars of the film are Jerry’s two pets: Mr. Whiskers, the erratic Scottish feline and his trusty canine, who turns out to be less man’s best friend and more man’s best psychiatrist. Frankly, it’s a bonkers plot, and it remains to be seen whether the offbeat tone holds up over the length of the entire runtime. But from this latest preview, Reynolds looks to give a performance that is just as outrageous as the source material, which has us feeling cautiously optimistic.

Ryan Reynolds will serve up nine kinds of crazy when The Voices debuts across theaters and VOD services on February 6.

THE VOICES is a genre-bending film which centers around Jerry, a lovable but disturbed factory worker who yearns for the attention of a woman in accounting. When their relationship takes a sudden turn, we follow Jerry’s perspective as his talking pets, a sinister cat and benevolent dog, lead him down a fantastical, murderous path.
