Scarlett Johansson Says Filming Avengers: Infinity War Was Bittersweet

For fans, Avengers: Infinity War is the most exciting Marvel movie ever because it marks the grand finale of the first ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For fans, Avengers: Infinity War is the most exciting Marvel movie ever because it marks the grand finale of the first ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For the stars of the franchise, though, the production must have been tinged with sadness as they knew that this might be the final time they’ll all get to work together.

Scarlett Johansson, for instance, has revealed in a new interview that filming Infinity War was a very “bittersweet” job from her as it meant the surrogate family she’d built with her co-stars over the past decade was about to break up, though it was “exciting” to work with the “extended family” of the MCU, too.

“It’s been really exciting to get to work with some of the actors from different franchises that I have just admired. I guess you would say we are sort of an extended family. And then, of course, there are new characters that are also being introduced to the family. That part of it is wonderful because certainly what Marvel has really championed for, I think, is hiring actors who are unexpected, are dedicated and are fresh. They advocate for new, and that part of it is so exciting.”

Continuing on, she said:

Of course, it’s bittersweet for me because I look around and see the cast and crew that have really become very close friends of mine and like a movie family, and I know that perhaps this could be the last time that all of us are together in this kind of way. It’s a bittersweet feeling, but I’m really proud of the work that we’ve done. And I’m proud of what we’ve built. I really feel like I’ve taken this character as far as I can go within this context, and I’m proud of that.”

Johansson’s feelings gel with what we’ve heard from many other members of the mega-ensemble cast. Other OG stars of the MCU have also spoken about it feeling like an emotional end of an era, like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. On the other hand, the newer faces – like Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland – have talked about their delight at getting the chance to work with some of the Avengers for the first time.

Meanwhile, Johansson’s comment about feeling like she’s taken her character as far she can go “within this context” is more eyebrow-raising. For any other hero, we’d take this as a hint that they’re not long for the franchise, but Black Widow is one of those we’re pretty certain will make it out alive. We’ve had it on good authority that Johansson is getting her own solo movie in Phase Four, after all.

Perhaps, ScarJo is speaking about this being the last time she’ll appear with the original generation of Avengers? Rumours abound that the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye and Thor could bow out of the MCU in Avengers: Infinity War‘s sequelIf Natasha Romanoff sticks around though, as we expect her to, she’ll likely work with the newer heroes such as Black Panther, Captain Marvel and more.
