Scream Scribe Kevin Williamson Inks Deal With Miramax To Develop Genre Films

Even if you don't know the name of Kevin Williamson offhand, there are very strong odds that you're familiar with his body of work in some fashion. For starters, he breathed new life into the teen slasher genre back in the 1990's with the game-changer that was Scream and a franchise somewhat similar to it, that being I Know What You Did Last Summer.

In the time since, he’s kept busy by being one of the chief architects behind television series such as The Vampire Diaries and The Following, both of which were markedly different, but each had their own rabid fanbases. With that, it comes as no surprise that he still be in demand over in Hollywood.

According to Deadline, Williamson has signed “a new first-look pact to develop elevated genre film content” with Miramax. Of course, this wouldn’t limit him to horror, as he could dabble in the realms of science fiction and fantasy as well, but we’re wondering what other horror concepts his brain may spawn. Don’t forget, Cursed was also a product of his.

Here’s what Williamson himself had to offer regarding this new venture:

“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Bill Block and to be back in the feature space working with new filmmakers in the genre I love so much.”

Likewise, here’s what Block, CEO of Miramax, had to say:

“We are delighted for Kevin and his creative forces to return to his film making roots with our company. Kevin’s diverse talents are the perfect fit for Miramax who is looking to support talent across all platforms.”

Exciting as this may be, we ask that you not bank on another Scream film being birthed from this deal. After all, the fourth movie in the series didn’t do as well at the box office, and there’s also the matter of the TV show kicking off its third season soon enough. Still, only time will tell.
