Bringing together a who’s who of voice acting talent, the creative minds behind Pineapple Express and This Is The End have cooked up a world where food is sentient. Lining the shelves of supermarkets and vying for human attention, things take a turn for the worse when it suddenly dawns on Seth Rogen’s sausage and his edible companions that humans take food home for the sole purpose of satisfying an appetite.

Perhaps the one element that Sausage Party nails, at least based on today’s vertical slice, is its ability to subvert expectations. Not just because it opens much like any DreamWorks animation, but character dialog and action scenes – including a brilliant sequence inspired by Saving Private Ryan‘s masterful Omaha Beach opening – are full of pleasant surprises.

Joining Rogen in the voice booth are Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek. The official logline describes the riotous comedy as so: “Sausage Party, the first R-rated CG animated movie, is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store.”

Having screened for critics only yesterday at SXSW 2016, Rogen and Goldberg’s Sausage Party will hobble toward a theatrical release on August 12.
