The master and the apprentice is a cinematic trope as old as time, but in Lucasfilm’s far-away galaxy, the tradition of one Jedi Master schooling a young Padawan on the nuances of the Force takes on a whole new meaning.
From Palpatine and Vader to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars fans don’t have to look too far to locate a Force-sensitive duo, and when The Last Jedi drops in December, Rey and Luke Skywalker will be the latest twosome to walk in the footsteps of greatness.
Their first exchange is reportedly a tense, steely affair, with Mark Hamill’s hermit outright refusing to teach Rey in fear that she could stumble down the same path as Kylo Ren. Wouldn’t you be a little apprehensive if your Jedi Academy was reduced to flames by the budding Jedi formerly known as Ben Solo?
Either way, like all great screen duos, it seems Rey and Luke will have some sort of altercation in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as a handful of trailer screenshots appear to show Daisy Ridley’s would-be Jedi standing over Luke, staff in hand, ready to strike. If Star Wars Stuff is on the right track, this shot is lifted from the same scene in which a drenched Luke Skywalker looks up at his offscreen attacker.
Mind you, the screenshot depicting Rey is significantly brighter than that of Luke, so this is far from a confirmation. Furthermore, yesterday brought forth a new piece of speculative intel about Ahch-To’s “uninvited guest,” which could go some ways to explaining these trailer screenshots.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will see a release on December 15th, and word is it’ll herald our first look at both Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Ron Howard’s Star Wars anthology flick, which is now going by the official title of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
