With news that Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) is being courted for the Captain Marvel movie, BossLogic has produced a rather stellar piece that imagines The Young Pope actor as Doctor Walter Lawson (AKA Mar-Vell).

He is, in a nutshell, the mentor figure for Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), who is imbued with superhuman strength, energy projection, and flight soon after her DNA is infused with that of an extra-terrestrial. Now that’s what I call a close encounter.

As for BossLogic’s beautiful rendering, the prolific concept artist has gone for a more classic-inspired look while creating Jude Law’s Mar-Vell. In the comics, that character is often portrayed in military garb, or as a high-ranking Kree soldier, though without any official details to consult, it’s impossible to gauge the direction Marvel will eventually take. Still, if nothing else, this is a tantalizing preview of what’s to come – you know, providing Jude Law signs along the dotted line.

Check it out down in the gallery below, along with some of BossLogic’s other recent work:

Also starring Brie Larson and, presumably, Star Wars alum Ben Mendelsohn as leader of the Skrulls, Captain Marvel has been angled as a period piece, after Kevin Feige confirmed to those at San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie will be rooted in the 1990s.

Such a break from the established MCU timeline will allow Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to swing by for a cameo (and with two eyes!), all the while offering a neat, standalone adventure that helps fill the gap between Infinity War and Avengers 4.

That’s not to say that Captain Marvel won’t have some form of connective tissue with its MCU brethren – Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is expected to feature in Avengers 4, after all. How exactly it’ll all tie together remains to be seen, but we’ll begin to find out more once Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s spinoff begins filming early next year.
