Filming is now well underway on the Toronto set of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and while recent rumors of Ben Affleck having a cameo appearance as Batman have drawn attention away from the core, villainous cast, Just Jared has pulled the limelight back to the main event by offering up our first look at Will Smith in costume as sharpshooting assassin, Deadshot.

Granted, while social media is already rife with complaints over the page-to-screen interpretation, these stills appear to be from a flashback sequence, given that both of Floyd Lawton’s eyes remain intact. Either that, or Ayer’s superhero flick will document the origins of the character, who quickly becomes one of Batman’s primary villains alongside the rest of the film’s ensemble cast.

Donning a red-leather trench coat, hat and beard, Will Smith’s rendition appears to be heavily influenced by the Batman: Gotham Knight animated movie, where Lawton was seen wearing a similar guise before transforming into the one-eyed killer that fans will instantly recognize. With principal photography taking place over the course of the next few weeks, we can expect to see much more of Smith as Deadshot, not to mention Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne in their respective roles. The question is, will anyone snap a picture of Affleck on the set of Suicide Squad and put those aforementioned rumors to bed? We’ll have to wait patiently to find out.

Have a gander at Will Smith as the deadly assassin using the gallery below and let us know your early impressions of his interpretation of Floyd Lawton. Suicide Squad opens on August 5, 2016.
