Sylvester Stallone took to social networking site Twitter last night to tease details for his upcoming threequel The Expendables 3. He announced that he was in the process of writing it and told fans that there will be a ton of surprises in the film. Check out what he had to say below.

“Writing EX3 at the moment… there are [sic] going to be mountains of surprises,” the action hero claimed. “EX3 needs NEW blood and more humour…the films were always meant to be more on the humorous side with moments of drama.”

Buzz has been circulating for the latest instalment since back in November, when Nicholas Cage was reported to have joined the cast – a story Stallone quickly shot down.

Famed for invoking 80’s action movies and its tongue-in-cheek dialogue, The Expendables has established itself as a franchise following its debut in 2010. Boasting iconic actors including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, the film grossed an unexpected $274 million worldwide and effectively reincarnated many of the stars’ wayward careers.

Hollywood duly latched onto The Expendables and used its innate tone as a blueprint for success. In many ways, movies such as The Last Stand and Bullet to the Head owe their existence to the nostalgic formula Stallone had concocted, and though many argue that his films never rise above the sum of their parts, a niche market undoubtedly exists for Sly’s band of weathered renegades.

Without a production crew or director attached to The Expendables 3, a release date is still some way off. Nevertheless, Stallone remains optimistic he can maintain his cast of burly A-listers and, if his penultimate Tweet is anything to go by, perhaps attract even more. As he puts it, “no S. Seagel, sorry, but maybe we get lucky with J. Chan! And some young bloods!! By young I mean 22 to 27.”

Regardless, the casting of Jackie Chan would surely bolster the film’s potential line-up. What’s more, buzz is already spreading that Stallone has his eyes on Wesley Snipes and Vinnie Jones too. Still, at this point in time we can expect that good old rumour mill to keep spinning until the film enters production.

What do you think of these latest rumours for The Expendables 3? Would you like to see Jackie Chan team up with Stallone & Co.? Or should the stars quit while they’re ahead? Sound off in the comments below!
