The Expendables 3 is still in development but already we’ve been treated to some interesting news regarding the film. We know that Jackie Chan will be taking a role and we’ve also heard that Sylvester Stallone is also trying to rope in Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Nicolas Cage.

There was also a rumour of Clint Eastwood wanting to take a stab at directing the film, but that turned out to be just a joke. Now, we’re receiving more tantalizing news as Stallone has teased fans with a possible director choice for the film.

Recently, Stallone wrote on Twitter, “What about Mel Gibson directing EXPENDABLES FIVE???” He immediately followed that up with “No , I was kidding about [that] but seriously, what about Mel Gibson directing EXPENDABLES 3? Opinions anyone? Curious…”

Of course, this could turn out to be nothing and meaningless but maybe, just maybe, Stallone is trying to gauge audience interest in having Gibson as director for the film. After all, Gibson’s last effort behind the camera was in 2006 with Apocalypto, so having him step in here would be a nice comeback of sorts.

Plus, he’s shown in the past that he can handle directing action with the aforementioned Apocalypto as well as Braveheart. Personally, I think he’d be a solid choice to direct. Maybe he’ll have a role in the film as well?

Despite his personal behaviour, Gibson is still a talented individual, behind and in front of the camera. He’s no stranger to the action genre, not as a director or actor, and this could be the type of gig he needs to get his career back on track. Let’s not forget that he was once an action star and having him associated with a film like this could be a good idea for both parties.

What do you think though? Would you like to see Mel Gibson direct The Expendables 3? Would you like to see him have a role in the film? Let us know in the comments below.
