Judd Apatow’s The Lonely Island movie may have ducked under the radar shortly after it earned the green light at Universal, but today the musical comedy has emerged with a new title and synopsis to boot.
Now, the feature formerly known as Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie will be released as Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in early June. Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are behind the lens, with the delightfully tongue-in-cheek plot centering on Andy Samberg’s budding singer/rapper Conner4Real who, after releasing his sophomore album to dire reviews, faces a crisis of confidence.
After reigning supreme for so long, Samberg’s musician is “no longer the dopest star of all” and reunites with his former band members to stage a comeback. Set in the “world of music” expect big name cameos to feature, with Justin Timberlake’s mother lover surely a shoo-in.
Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone will headline Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping when it hits theaters on June 3. Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph are among the early cast list.
Universal Pictures’ POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
