Thor Will Get A New Hammer In Avengers: Infinity War, And Here’s How

Thor: Ragnarok was a damn good time and (I think) the single funniest MCU movie to date. But aside from all the gags, it's going to have a major impact on the MCU going forward as Mjolnir was destroyed, Asgard was ruined and Thor said goodbye to his right eye. That's one hell of a triple whammy for the God of Thunder, but he needs to get back on his feet quickly as Avengers: Infinity War is just around the corner and Thanos isn't going to wait until he's got his breath back.

We’ve previously seen concept art of Thor in Infinity War, and in it, he’s wielding a mysterious new weapon. Since then, fans have been wondering about the particulars of this new object: what it’s called, where it’s from and, most importantly, what it can do? Now, we might have some of the answers to those questions. Working with information from an inside source involved in the production of Avengers: Infinity WarSuperBroMovies is reporting that during the film, Thor crafts himself a new hammer, but ends up with only the head.

Who in the MCU could provide a handle for it, though? Why, none other than Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot, who always has wood to spare. In a moment that sounds as if it’ll nicely knit together the primarily earth-based Avengers and the cosmic Guardians, Groot cuts off his own arm and offers it to Thor as a handle for his hammer. This dovetails neatly with a recent quote from Groot mocap performer Terry Notary, who said the following:

“I am playing teenage Groot, I can’t say too much about him, but he’s coming of age, so you’ll see the teenager find a mentor to look up to and to model himself after. The character’s great, and the films are going to be great.”

It sounds as if this mysterious mentor might be Thor himself, who with the loss of his eye looks to be nudged into finally taking over from Odin and assuming a role of galactic importance after Infinity War. That is… if he survives the coming of Thanos.

Avengers: Infinity War is set to hit theaters on May 4th, 2018.
