Marvel Now Has The Top 3 Spots At The Box Office This Year

Much to the surprise of no one, Marvel has now claimed the top 3 spots at the domestic box office for this year. And Ant-Man 2 hasn't even hit theaters yet!

Although it’s already been a record-breaking year at the ticket booth for Marvel Studios, the taste of victory got even sweeter the other week when the company saw its total revenue soar past $3 billion at the global box office, a personal best.

That’s right, roughly six months into 2018 and the MCU has already made work of the previous record holder, $2.6 billion, which was set in 2017 thanks to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok.

The current haul for Marvel Studios this year stands at $3.24B, earned by Black Panther ($1.34B) and Avengers: Infinity War ($1.90B). Unbelievably, the motion picture studio has yet to even bring us Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6th), their third and final entry of 2018. While undeniably not the strongest movie to close out a banner on, expect the Peyton Reed-directed sequel to contribute significantly, nonetheless.

But when you look beyond just Marvel Studios, the brand as a whole is performing extremely well, too, as Marvel movies now make up the top 3 spots at the domestic box office this year. We’ve got Black Panther at $698.6 million, Infinity War at $621.7 million and counting and Deadpool 2 still going strong with $207.4 million. If there was ever any worry of superhero fatigue, I think we can put that to rest now, don’t you?

And while the aforementioned Ant-Man 2 may not be a smash hit for the company, it’ll still be fascinating to discover if Reed’s follow-up experiences a boon in box office receipts, given its opening under the shadow of what is essentially the biggest Marvel movie in the history of Marvel movies (Infinity War). Not to mention that there’s also Venom to look forward to, which could be a decent moneymaker as well.
