The Boondock Saints, one of the greatest cult classics around. Although it was only shown in five theatres for one week when it was originally released, the film has gone on to spawn a sequel and has gained a massive following, making it a bonafide cult classic.

Tomorrow the film is receiving a Blu-Ray re-release (check out our review) and I had the chance to sit down with director Troy Duffy for an interview (full interview here). While speaking about the film, I asked him whether a Boondock Saints 3 was on the cards. Turns out it is, but not in the format we were expecting.

Duffy told me that he actually has plans to continue on the story of the MacManus brothers but not on the big screen. Instead, he’s in talks with TV execs to bring the story of the Irish vigilantes to television. He told me that it would be a faithful adaptation meaning that a network like HBO or AMC would be hosting it, allowing Duffy to portray the violence and language that fans have come to expect. He also told me that stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery are interested in participating.

While nothing is confirmed, Duffy seemed pretty confident that it’s going to happen. I asked him about a film as well although he seemed less sure of that. After all, it’s much harder to get a feature film made, especially these days. Here’s what Troy Duffy had to say:

“We’ve been approached to do a possible Boondock Saints TV series. So the fans may be getting a part 3 as a television show. We might be able to pull that off….I actually called both Sean and Norman and they both said “hell yeah, we’ll drop everything.”

I then asked him for confirmation that it would indeed be on a network like HBO or AMC and he said, “that is correct.”

So there you have it. Sure, I would have preferred a film but I’ll take what I can get. Any Boondocks is a good thing right? I’m a big fan of both films and am super eager to see more of the MacManus brothers. Hopefully we’ll receive confirmation on it soon.
