A piece of unused MCU concept art has some people thinking that the Avengers 4 story may involve the Iron Legion in some capacity.
Over on Reddit (h/t ComicBook.com), one curious Marvel fan uncovered some artwork of Tony Stark surveying his fleet (see below), which was initially spotted in a special featurette dedicated to Avengers: Infinity War.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean that this concept art almost made the cut for Joe and Anthony Russo’s mega-movie; for one, the exterior design dates back to Stark’s previous models, indicating that this is likely artwork from Age of Ultron or, in the more likely scenario, Iron Man 3, in which Robert Downey Jr.’s Avenger unleashed an entire army of Iron Man suits in a last-ditch attempt to foil Aldrich Killian.
See for yourself:
There is one potential twist to the tale, though, and it involves Avengers 4 and its alleged use of time travel. Supposing the Russo Brothers’ 2019 blockbuster journeys back to MCU past, perhaps we’ll visit some alternate timeline in which Tony Stark didn’t make the cut for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and therefore continued to craft his Iron Man suits on his own accord?
Remember, the Iron Legion was blown to smithereens at the tail-end of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, so there’s only one way the above concept art could materialize during Avengers 4 – time travel.
It’s the one MCU rumor that refuses to go away, but not that Ant-Man and the Wasp has come and gone, Marvel Studios is bracing for some time travel of its own, what with its next gig, Captain Marvel, set to whisk viewers off to the 1990s.
