Hot on the heels of new images yesterday from next April’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel has released a first image from their most peculiar big-screen venture to date, Guardians of the Galaxy, which is set to hit theaters next August.

The shot (above) finds members of the titular superhero team lined up in a police station after having been apprehended by intergalactic police force Nova Corps. Comic-Con attendees got a glimpse of this same scene earlier this year, in which Nova Corps leader Rhomann Drey (John C. Reilly) identifies the Guardians to one of his colleagues (Peter Serafinowicz).

Pictured in the image, from left to right, are team members including green-skinned beauty Gamora (Zoe Saldana), devil-may-care human pilot Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), the fast-talking Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), hulking warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and tree-like being Groot (Vin Diesel).

We saw concept art bearing a resemblance to this image a few months back. Check out that image below:

An official plot synopsis was also released today, providing further clarification on the details of the action-packed adventure on which the Guardians find themselves in the film:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

The film will co-star Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, in addition to Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Glenn Close and Michael Rooker.
