A critical success at this year’s Sundance, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints has picked up distribution and dropped a new trailer. With a release set for the end of this summer, the film has already snagged multiple awards. It was honoured with the gong for best cinematography for a U.S. drama at 2013 Sundance as well as a nomination for the Grand Jury prize.
The latest film from director David Lowery, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints tells the story of outlaws on the run. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara star as Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, two lovers being chased across the country by the law. During a particularly nasty shoot out, a police officer is at the receiving end of a bullet from Ruth’s gun. Eager to protect his wife and their unborn child, Muldoon takes the blame and is thrown in the slammer after being handed a harsh sentence. Years later, still locked up, he finds out his wife has given birth to their daughter. Desperate to be reunited with his family, he escapes prison to join them.
For saying the film is based on an original script by Lowery, the trailer lends more than a knowing wink to Cormac McCarthy. Adaptations of McCarthy’s work such as The Road and No Country For Old Men are littered with doomed characters and ill-fated romance in a hopeless world. This first trailer for Saints points towards a similar predicament for Affleck and Mara as the couple torn apart by their mistake. Spliced into this preview is a glimpse of co-star Ben Foster as Patrick Wheeler; the chap who takes up with Ruth while Bob is behind bars. You can check out the trailer below.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints lands in cinemas in the U.S. on August 16th. No other release dates have been announced.
