It’s that time of year again. Time to get in out of the warm, healthy sun, sit down with a pound or two of movie theater popcorn, and watch gigantic robots battle it out to the thrum of heavy metal music and the waving of American flags. That’s right: contemporary auteur Michael Bay’s next entry into his seminal Transformers franchise will be hitting theaters in just over a month. Are you ready for Transformers: Age of Extinction?
A new international trailer for the film was released this week, and it showcases Bay’s signature style of brightly colored things blowing up while young women in short shorts run hither and thither. Replacing Shia LaBeouf as the lead is a jacked-up Mark Wahlberg, and one wonders who got the better end of that deal. Plot details are not the main point in these films, but based on what we’ve seen so far in these trailers, the world is coming to an end, human beings are threatened with extinction, and the only ones who can save us are brave Mack Trucks and their ability to fall from extreme heights.
Although I make fun, this is really all par for the course for the Transformers franchise. Transformers: Age of Extinction looks no better or worse than any of the other films. Never one for subtlety, Bay seems to be throwing all of his formidable love of stuff blowing up and metal crunching into this one, introducing some brand new robots to go with the old.
Also, Mark Wahlberg could make for a nice change in the leading man department; as we see in this trailer, he has an alien gun! If gigantic robots and bad jokes are your thing, then you’ll enjoy the hell out of this movie.
