Weekend Box Office – July 25, 2010

As Inception had another strong weekend and Salt opened to a respectable amount, another box office weekend is now behind us. Although Salt managed to open with $36.5 million, it was not enough to take the number one spot from Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece, Inception.

As Inception had another strong weekend and Salt opened to a respectable amount, another box office weekend is now behind us. Although Salt managed to open with $36.5 million, it was not enough to take the number one spot from Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece, Inception.

1. Inception – $43.5 million; $144 mil
2. Salt – $36.5 million; $36.5 mil (debut weekend)
3. Despicable Me – $24.1 million; $162 mil
4. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $9.69 million; $42.6 mil
5. Toy Story 3 – $9.03 million; $380 mil
6. Ramona and Beezus – $8 million; $8 mil (debut weekend)
7. Grown Ups – $7.6 million; $142 mil
8. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $7.03 million; $280 mil
9. The Last Airbender – $4.17 million; $123 mil
10. Predators – $2.85 million; $46.6 mil

Angelina Jolie’s latest film Salt was released this weekend and despite its strong opening of $36.5 million, it was not enough to steal the top spot from Inception. With $43.5 million, Inception took first place and pushed its total to $144 million. It isn’t much of a surprise that Inception and Salt ended up in the top two spots but I did have doubts as to if Inception would end up at number one. $43.5 million is more than analysts were predicting and I’m happy that the film is doing so well.

Despicable Me is also still going strong and is proving to be a great success for Universal. The film is now at $162 million and it won’t be leaving theatres anytime soon.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice took the number four spot this weekend and considering it only added another $9.69 million it is still considered a flop. At a total of $42.6 million the film isn’t making anywhere near as much as the studio had hoped. It seems as if all the negative reviews are hurting the film and people just aren’t willing to give it a chance.

Toy Story 3 took the number five spot this weekend with $9 million and beat out the newly released Ramona and Beezus which opened at number six. The Karate Kid and Knight and Day are now off the list (finally) and rounding out the bottom half of the list is Grown Ups, Eclipse, The Last Airbender and Predators.

Grown Ups is doing surprisingly well despite the negative reviews and it proves that audiences are still drawn to Adam Sandler. Eclipse is sliding down the list but at a total of $280 million I don’t think Summit is too concerned. The Last Airbender continues to flop and the chances of a sequel are getting slimmer and slimmer and Predators is starting to leave audience’s minds as it is already in the number ten spot after only two weeks.

Hopefully Inception will continue to hold onto its number one spot next weekend but it may have some competition from Salt and Dinner For Schmucks.  Will it keep the number one position? We’ll have to wait until next week to see.
