James Gunn Clarifies Where Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Fits Into The MCU Timeline

Over on Twitter, director James Gunn has clarified exactly where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 takes place on the MCU timeline.

There’s been some confusion of late regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and, more specifically, where it fits into the MCU timeline.

Earlier this month, James Gunn himself announced that Vol 3., a cosmic threequel that’s since been described as “freaking amazing,” will take place after Avengers 4. That certainly makes sense, too, as the Thanopocalypse of Infinity War raised some potentially massive cliffhangers that likely won’t be resolved until 2019.

But while promoting his role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt, hinted that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may be rooted in MCU past, though it’s looking increasingly likely that Mr. Pratt was simply trying to throw everyone off the scene with some tongue-in-cheek humor. He did claim that the famous Blue Man Group could become the new Guardians, after all.

Leave it to James Gunn, then, to come in and set the record straight…

Over on Twitter (h/t Heroic Hollywood), the filmmaker was asked whether Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place before or after Infinity War, to which he replied:

That ought to clear things up, right? Besides, James Gunn seems to be more concerned with closing the book on his Guardians trilogy than he is with revisiting the MCU of yesteryear. Which is to say that, with the exception of flashbacks to Peter Quill’s childhood, we imagine that most, if not all of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 unfurls in the present day, where Star-Lord and the team are still reeling from their encounter with the Mad Titan himself, Thanos.

Either way, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently on course for a May 2020 release.
