Gamora Infinity War

Zoe Saldana Opens Up About Leaving The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Speaking to the LA Times, actress Zoe Saldana opened up about leaving the MCU following Gamora's death in Avengers: Infinity War.

As one of the closest links to Marvel’s Mad Titan, it was always going to be the case that Gamora would feature pretty heavily in Avengers: Infinity War.

And sure enough, once Joe and Anthony Russo’s event movie to end all event movies got going, the green-skinned Guardian was the one character who arguably brought us closer to Thanos – taking us into his cold, dead heart with her selflessness and talk of childhood memories. Horrible childhood memories at that.

It’s a credit to Zoe Saldana’s performance, then, that Gamora’s arc never once strained credulity, culminating in that heartbreaking moment on Vormir when Thanos took control of the Soul Stone at the expense of his “little one.” It signaled the end of Gamora, as she was thrown over a cliff to her death, and while chatting to the Los Angeles Times about all things Infinity War recently, Saldana was asked if she was sad to say goodbye to Marvel after all these years.

Surprisingly, her reply makes it sound as if she truly is done with the franchise, with the actress saying:

Yes and no. It was sad, of course, because I think that we all suffer from FOMO. There is a fear always of missing out, but I’m so happy that I got to play a part in the Marvel Universe, and I also got to play a character that — it has been brought to my attention — is seen as a great role model for young women. And also for young boys. I live for that, that’s why I do what I do. So I guess I’m going to cry all the way to “Avatar,” you know?

As we said above, it’s a bit surprising to hear Saldana talk like this. Sure, the Mad Titan’s favourite daughter is certainly dead at the moment, but we strongly suspect that many of the heroes that perished during Infinity War – including her – will be brought back to life in time for Avengers 4. Plus, a way for Gamora to return has already been teased.

Then again, maybe reversing her death would undercut “the degree of evil” that Thanos operates on and would reduce the impact of his actions in Avengers: Infinity War somewhat. We’d been led to believe that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would feature Zoe Saldana, but who knows, maybe it won’t? Alternatively, it’s possible that the actress is just very good at watching what she says in interviews. Either way, it’s going to be a long wait before we find out for sure.
