While you may have been left hoping you’d seen the last of Civil War II after the underwhelming event series wrapped up, today saw the release of Civil War II: The Oath from Marvel. Written by Captain America scribe Nick Spencer with art by Phil Noto, it set up a new status quo for the Marvel Universe and laid the groundwork for the Secret Empire story.
During the course of the issue, we learned that Steve Rogers got to see a vision from Ulysses which the rest of the Avengers missed; while it may be a world in which he’s killed by Miles Morales’ Spider-Man, this possible future is also one where America is ruled over by Hydra, something which is currently the dream of the brainwashed Captain America.

Oh, and those strange martian-like spaceships we’ve been seeing in various looks at the future since Captain America: Rebirth seven years ago? Well, we now know that those belong to Hydra, and it’s safe to say that all of this is a hint as to what we can expect from Secret Empire (even if things do end up playing out slightly differently than what’s teased here).
Something which appears to have set all this in motion is the fact the Cap has been sworn in as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., which puts the Hydra agent in one of the most powerful positions in the Marvel Universe. The majority of fans obviously want to see Captain America return to his heroic ways, and that may very well happen one day, but in the meantime, you can’t deny that this all looks to be a lot of fun.
