Though Darth Vader has taken something of a backseat in the modern run of Star Wars movies, at least Marvel’s comics have been on hand to expand the beloved anti-villain’s story beyond what we’ve seen on the big screen. In fact, they’ve been amongst the best comics the company has produced in a long while.
This will probably continue to be the case for the foreseeable future, too, as the next arc in the series promises more excitement for fans keen to fill in the blanks of Vader’s saga. Taking to Twitter this week, writer Charles Soule has revealed what the upcoming arc in his Darth Vader series will be about, telling us it’s called Fortress Vader and will explore how the villain got his gothic castle found on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.
The fortress first appeared in the Star Wars universe in 2016’s Rogue One, revealing that this, er, charming building was where Vader chose to lay his helmet. It was a fascinating addition to the character’s mythology, too, as the planet holds a lot of importance for him. Mustafar is where he originally became Vader, after all, after Anakin Skywalker’s climactic battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith resulted in him receiving horrific burns. Not to mention it also cost him his limbs.
Concept artist Doug Chiang previously revealed that Vader built his fortress on this spot because there’s a lava lake hidden in a cave underneath the surface. This is one of those places that’s ripe with Force energy (see The Empire Strikes Back and The Last Jedi for other examples), so the villain goes here to meditate and harness the power of the cave. Hopefully, we’ll see this concept explored more fully in Soule’s upcoming Darth Vader arc for Marvel Comics.
Tell us, have you been keeping up with this particular series and if so, are you excited to see where Soule takes us next? Let us know by dropping a comment in the usual place!
