In the past, we’ve talked at length about the great stuff DC’s been doing with their new Young Animal imprint. Basically, Gerard Way and company have taken characters and concepts readers are familiar with in outrageous new directions, creating a line of books that feel altogether different from what we’d normally get via DC proper, or even Vertigo.
To be honest, if I were to personally recommend any title from this initiative, it’d have to be that of Mother Panic. I say that because not only have I found it to be the most enjoyable, but also because it’s incredibly easy to pick up and inviting to the average reader.
Odds are that you’ve read a Batman comic or two at some point in your life, therefore there’s a fair chance you’ll feel right at home here. In a way, Gotham City is a universe unto itself, populated by rich and complex heroes and villains. What Jody Houser has done is showing us corners of it that we didn’t even know existed, all the while making for a mature reading experience.
In issue #11, expect Violet Paige’s history with Gather House to continue to haunt her present. Sure, her old friend seems grateful for freeing her, so to speak, but I often think twice before trusting anyone who isn’t the title character. After all, Gotham is one strange beast.
