The series finale of Friday Night Lights may not be the last time fans get to see their beloved characters. According to /Film, executive producer Peter Berg, who served as director for the movie, is interested in continuing the story in film format and bringing back Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.
Grantland editor Bill Simmons posted the following on his Twitter page:
“PS: We didn’t put it in the oral history, but Peter Berg told us he wants to do an FNL movie with Chandler/Britton off the final episode.”
TV Line has also confirmed that Berg is looking into making this happen. But there is a problem. Since Friday Night Lights was originally a book before it became a movie and before it became a TV series, the issue of obtaining rights comes into play. This could prevent the movie from even hitting the pre-production phase.
The only thing Universal told TV Line was “We do not currently have a FNL project in development.” As of now, it’s still up in the air as to whether or not this will actually happen.
I watched the first two seasons of the series when it originally aired on NBC. When the schedule kept changing, I gave up on watching it and haven’t returned since. I’m not a huge TV person, but I did enjoy what I had seen of the show.
That being said, I don’t see the point in this. Friday Night Lights has already been a movie, which was originally a true story. It just kind of seems overdone. Do we really need another film?
