Pulling together creative talent from Italy, America, Spain, England and France, HBO’s religious drama is nothing short of an international affair, and given that The Young Pope heralds Sorrentino’s return to English-language territory in light of his well-deserved Oscar win for The Great Beauty, we’re definitely excited to see what he has in store for us.

Earning the backing of Sky and Canal Plus, it’s the filmmaker’s first English since last year’s comedy-drama Youth, and here’s how HBO pitches The Young Pope: “From Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Academy Award®-winning ‘The Great Beauty,’ ‘The Young Pope’ tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s pontificate. The eight-episode series stars Jude Law as the complex and conflicted Pius XIII, the first American pope.”

Also starring Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli, and James Cromwell, look for the white smoke to come billowing out of the HBO chimneys when The Young Pope premieres later this year.
